I want to share something with you. This is really really weird. This past weekend, I spent a lovely weekend with my two brothers. For those of you who don’t know me really well, there are three boys in my family and I am the oldest, the middle brother is Marshall, and the youngest is Richard. I am actually in business with my brother Rich. We call ourselves The Madow Brothers. We do a lot of motivational speaking and we have a few products that help dentists in their practice. That’s what we do.

Be sure to follow my LIVE daily broadcasts on Periscope at www.periscope.tv/davidmadow.

So each year we try to have a brother’s weekend. Lately it’s been in NY. We just take a quick drive up to NY. It’s about a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive from where we live. And we spend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday generally in Manhattan doing some cool things and then we head back. So me being the only vegan, my brothers are not vegan, they try to get little jabs at you every once in awhile. For example, we were walking through Manhattan, and Marshall will generally make little comments like if we are passing a store or restaurant that is clearly serving meat he will say something like, “Dave you want to go in there and get something to eat?” I’m used to it and I don’t really care. I usually brush it off or make some type of comment. As a vegan we take some abuse. And I think I am going to stop taking the abuse because first of all I don’t think it’s funny. If it were my choice to not eat certain foods for no reason, maybe I would understand it but I am doing this because I love animals so much that I do not want to see them harmed in anyway. And if I can just do my part and not eat any animal products then I feel that I am not responsible for the suffering, the slaughter, and the horrific things that can on in that industry. To me it just doesn’t really sit well. What I get out of that is that they really don’t care about the animals.

So anyway, I was putting up with these kind of comments all weekend. And I don’t really say anything. I just kind of go with it. He’s my brother and I love him to death. I am actually really blessed to have two wonderful brothers. We get along so well. And we are all different in certain ways but we are all the same in certain ways as well. So it’s just really cool to spend time with your siblings.

But here’s what happened. After a weekend of hearing these little crazy comments, like “hey want to get a cheeseburger Dave? We are driving home and I am driving. We are driving from NY into NJ. Marshall is sitting in the front seat with me and all of a sudden he puts his hands over his eyes and starts saying “I can’t see. I don’t want to look at that.” So I go “Marshall what’s wrong?” And he says “I can’t look. I can’t look. Oh my god! It’s horrible!” Finally he told me what he was talking about. He was referring to a dead animal on the side of the road. There was an animal that was killed. I looked over and looked like maybe a large raccoon or something like that. It was a dead animal just kind of lying which of course no one wants to see. But I felt it really strange that my brother Marshall got so disturbed looking at road kill. But the same person is eating meat practically any day and has no problem eating animal products. I found that a little bit puzzling.

When I first went vegan, I tried to convert the world. I thought that everyone needs to be vegan – right now. But I learned that doesn’t really work. When you start talking to people that aren’t ready, they don’t get the message and they don’t understand the message. So I backed off and I don’t do that anymore. I lead by example as you know. And I am very strict about my eating. I do not make exceptions knowingly.

I feel really good about what I am doing. But here is my brother who is not vegan and has no problem eating meat. I have talked to him in the past about animal suffering and he does not want really want to hear it or doesn’t want to change. But when he sees an animal on the side of the road he is freaking out. I wonder if he even knows or understands that when he is eating a hamburger or a steak, the horror and suffering those animals had to go through to get to his plate.

I get it. When you are not involved with factory farms, and raising them, you are not seeing it. Or maybe you are seeing the final product on your plate or wrapped up in cellophane at the grocery store. I wonder, after seeing him flip out at a dead animal on the side of the road, does he know when eating hamburger that the cow going on the truck to the slaughterhouse often times hundreds of miles in horrible conditions whether it’s really hot or really cold. I have actually seen this from the people that have done transporting, many of the animals are frozen the the metal frame work of the truck. It’s common to see this happen to these live animals that are literally frozen to the metal frame of the truck. And in the heat, animals faint and they get heat stroke. 10% of them cannot even walk off the truck because they are so weak or dead. So often times they are beaten or chained up to get off the truck. It’s really horrible.

Then they get into the slaughterhouse and the first thing they do is to get stunned. It’s like a big bolt to the head to stun them to render them unconscious before their throats are slit. Sometimes it doesn’t work so they are cut live. This stuff is true people! You can check. Do your research. Talk with people that actually used to work at slaughterhouses. It’s absolutely horrific. It’s horrible.

I don’t even like talking about this on my show because I like to talk about peaceful things and things that improve your life. Not stuff that gives you nightmares. But it’s true. This stuff is happening every single day. By the way, to the tune of 80 billion land animals per year. Now that’s not even taking into consideration the marine animals. Just land animals alone – cows, pigs, chickens, lambs, goats, whatever it may be. 80 BILLION per year! Write that number out on a piece of paper. You probably can’t even write the number. That is 80 thousand million. So that’s 80,000,000,000 every single year. And my brother is sick to his stomach about one dead animal on the side of the road that was killed by a car. One. But he is eating cheeseburgers and bacon and steak and chicken and milk and eggs. You name it. It’s just really strange to me.

So if you are thinking about the suffering. I’d like you to think about it more. I am not telling you what you have to do and I lead by example. But I was a little thrown aback by someone who was taking these jabs at me all weekend long. From jabs to seeing a dead animal and almost throwing up. I would like to take him to a slaughterhouse or to a farm where these animals are actually raised. I bet he would stop eating animals. Or else he would say, “it’s horrible but I can’t control it. People are eating animals every single day.” I think this is what the average person thinks. I don’t know.

When I found out the truth, Yoko and I said to ourselves that we are done. We are not eating this stuff anymore. We are not going to contribute to this incredibly horrible animal agriculture. It’s going on but we are no longer going to contribute. Not only that but we are going to start teaching other people. We are not going to change the world by tomorrow but once we reach this critical mass which might be 10%. I think right now about 3% of the U.S. population is vegan or vegetarian. I don’t think it’s that far off to be honest with you. I have seen so many changes in the past several years. So when we hit that critical mass of 10%, I believe others will really start to notice in a big way. It’s like the domino effect. Things will really start changing quickly.

It’s very easy for me to say that there’s nothing I can do and that this is the way it’s always been. This is what my Dad says. I’m not like that. Call me weird. Call me different. Call me whatever you want. I may be. But all I know is that I love animals too much to be involved. If I had an animal on my plate, I could not eat it. I could not stand to look at it. I would be looking at the suffering going into my body and going into my cells. Knowing the truth, I just can’t do it. I can’t do it anymore.

So that was my weird story from the weekend and from traveling home. Is it going to change anyone? I don’t know. It’s one of Dave’s stories on The David Madow Lifestyle Show.

I have a lot of things happen to me every day and some of them turn into stories and some of them we can learn from but the others we can’t. I try my best to help people and I think I am doing a pretty darn good job of it. My podcast The David Madow Lifestyle Show is getting more downloads than ever.  We have people all over the world listening to us. We’re making a difference! There’s no question about it.

We are pretty much out of time. One more thing real quick. I am working on a date for the retreat in the Spring of 2017. We are going to spend a weekend together. It’s going to be awesome! We are going to be spending a weekend in my home and Yoko and I will be teaching you how to live the lifestyle. How to be happy, stronger, feel better about yourself, more confident. We are human beings and we are not always happy every second. Fundamentally I am really happy. Do I have crazy days? Yeah! But I am happy and I want to teach you how to live this lifestyle. Looking and feeling so good about yourself. It’s more unbelievable than anything you have ever experienced. I promise. So sign up for the VIP list and you will find out more about that.

Having said that, I think that’s it. Thank you so much for being with me today. I will see you next time for sure!
