57 – Cool Eating Tips / Instant Pot / New York Marathon

In this episode Dr. Dave and Yoko give a bunch of their cool eating tips as well as discuss their upcoming trip to New York City to run in the NYC Marathon!

CHAMOMILE TEA + CARDAMOM SEEDS
Dr. Dave and Yoko drink chamomile daily. Now, they have been adding Cardamom Seeds to it too for a lovely added flavor. For centuries chamomile tea has been recommended to be a stress reliever and reduce anxiety. It is also known for anti-cancer and anti-inflammation properties (note: the only ones that should not drink chamomile tea are pregnant or nursing moms).

USING INSTANT POT FOR COOKING
With multiple sensors and a micro-processor,  Instant Pot is an intelligent multi-cooker, capable of completely replacing pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker/porridge maker, sauté/browning pan, steamer, yogurt maker and stockpot warmer. Most importantly, Instant Pot cooks meals faster with less energy while preserving more nutrients and you can prepare your meals without oil, salt, or sugar.

This is an extremely healthy way to prepare your food recommended by Sharon and Chef AJ. Check it out this must add kitchen applicance: http://instantpot.com/

RAW MUSHROOMS
We recently learned from Sharon and Chef AJ to never eat raw mushrooms. First, is they have a very thick cell wall for your body to digest. Another reason is that mushrooms have agaritine in them and needs to be cooked so you body can process this better. Dr. Dave and Yoko still enjoy mushrooms in their diet – just now cooked.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
There are so many health benefits and remedies for apple cider vinegar. Yoko uses apple cider vinegar, water, and lemon oil for her face. It is good for your pores, acne, or even age spots. Dr. Dave and Yoko love the Bragg brand of apple cider vinegar http://bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar.html

RUNNING AND WALKING
Running and walking are two of Dr. Dave’s most favorite exercises. Walking is a great exercise anyone can get started doing today. Start at any location, any weather, any pace. The same goes for running. You don’t have to be a speed master and run a fast pace to be a runner. You can run any pace running on your own or in a race. In fact, many people these days alternate walking and running even during marathons.

SIGNING UP FOR RACES
It is awesome to sign up for a race and have a goal. When you have a fitness goal, it keeps you on track and motivated to get your walks and runs in daily. Yoko couldn’t even run 1 mile 10 years ago! For her running marathons is a huge physical and mental accomplishment. The first one was definitely the hardest and it changed her mind = “Now, I can do anything I want to and set my mind to since I did a marathon!” says Yoko.

NYC MARATHON RACE NOVEMBER 2, 2014
Dr. Dave and Yoko are very excited to run the NYC Marathon for the first time this month! This marathon started in 1970 and takes you through the streets of the five boroughs of New York City in a moving celebration of sport and diversity. The course included five bridges. See more information at: http://www.tcsnycmarathon.org/about-the-race/marathon-facts/history-of-the-new-york-city-marathon

HONOLULU MARATHON DECEMBER 14, 2014
Join Dr. Dave and Yoko are also doing the beautiful Honolulu marathon in December of this year. The Honolulu Marathon is one of the largest marathons with over 30,000 entrants and about 1/2 of them coming from Japan. “We are unique in that there is no limit on the number of participants and there is no cut off time, therefore attracting both fast runners as well as walkers.” This is amazing for people who have a lifetime goal to one day finish a marathon; the Honolulu Marathon makes this come true for people of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels.

BAY TO BREAKERS RACE MAY 17th, 2015 – Join Dr. Dave & Yoko!
Dr. Dave turns 60 in 2015 and he and Yoko would love for you (fans and listeners) to join them to celebrate Dr. Dave’s birthday and run with them. San Francisco’s Bay to Breakers is the oldest consecutively run annual footrace in the world, a staple to the City by the Bay since May 1912. With a starting point near the San Francisco Bay, a few blocks from The Embarcadero, the 12K race runs west through the city and finishes at the Great Highway where breakers crash onto the Pacific Coast’s Ocean Beach. A quintessential San Francisco experience for 102 years, the race is interwoven into the fabric of the city and is a true reflection and celebration of life between the breakers and the Bay.
